BFG Rescue came about for two reasons: Rogeiro, our Portuguese rescue dog, and the rescue of 80 large-breed dogs from a perrera in Spain, coordinated by Galgos del Sol. The idea of starting BFG Rescue had been something we’d talked about for a long time, but we never quite took the leap. That changed when we heard about the 80 dogs who urgently needed to be evacuated from a Spanish perrera. It became the catalyst for us to finally take that step and start BFG Rescue. We’re not new to rescue. Through our other businesses in pet transport and boarding, we’ve been involved in the rescue world for many years. But this felt like the right time to take things a step further and create something of our own. The dogs at the perrera had to be moved quickly following the closure of the municipal kennels. Any dogs left behind faced being euthanised. When Galgos del Sol put out a call for help, the videos they shared made the decision very easy for us. We initially planned to take just two dogs, but that soon became seven when it became clear just how difficult it would be to get all 80 dogs to safety. And so, BFG Rescue is now well and truly underway. We’ve secured a second field at Lower Hey Farm, giving the rescue dogs plenty of space to enjoy some much-needed outdoor time. Our indoor area is almost finished too - there’s just some painting left to do - so we’re getting everything ready for the big day. It’s been quite a journey already, but we’re incredibly excited about what’s ahead for BFG Rescue and, most importantly, about giving these dogs the safe and happy futures they deserve.
